The temperature is taken in the ear as the eardrum is the closest temperature to the brain. Something I didn't know! This thermometer also has an age indicator you select before checking the temperature (0-3 months, 3-36 months, and 36+ months). The thermometer will glow red/high fever, yellow/low fever, or green/no fever. Included with this thermometer is a small pack of extra plastic tips to change on the thermometer every time a temperature is taken. From testing this thermometer, I found that the temperature readings varied between .7 of a degree and changed when I did the other ear. This isn't detrimental, but with high fevers I want the most accurate temperature readings. The age indicator is an interesting feature but I constantly forget this step! I turn on the thermometer and go to take my child's temperature without setting the age and it won't read. Having to pull the thermometer back out to select the age and inserting the thermometer for a second time on a reluctant toddler had me thinking this feature is more of a hassle. This thermometer would be best suited for families with children under 36 months, as the age indicator is an inconvenience if everyone in the household is over 36 months. Good as baby's first thermometer. I would love if the ear tips were biodegradable as my family is trying to use less single use plastic. Overall, this thermometer is ok! I was thrilled to be chosen for this mission! My son is 18 months and I've struggled to take his temperature accurately using a forehead thermometer or a traditional one for under the arm or tongue. The delivery of this product also came at the perfect time for our household as my sons daycare is currently experiencing some COVID cases. The use of this thermometer is very easy. Turn it on, apply a lens cap (it will not work without one), set the patients age, put it in the entrance of their ear canal, and push the start button. The thermometer has sensors to warn you if you've angled it wrong, when it's working, and once the temperature has been read. You cannot mess up using this device! It is foolproof and accurate. I love that the thermometer grows with you. It has different age groups built in for the various fever temperature ranges. It's very easy to switch between age categories. The thermometer glows green when the temperature is in the normal range, yellow when it indicates a fever, and red when it indicates a high fever. I've only ever used an oral thermometer before and with my wiggly kids it's really hard to get them to sit still long enough to get a proper reading, so this one is fantastic in that regard. My only qualm with it and why I can't give it 5 stars is that I find it slightly finicky. The angle at which you point it inside the ear makes a huge difference! For example, consecutive readings would change between green (normal temp range) to yellow (low fever). It also has memory recall so you can see if the temperature has gone up or down since the last reading. I tried this thermometer on my 3 month old baby and I feel it was accurate. They say that forehead thermometers are not accurate for newborns and using the standard kind is difficult with such a small baby as you are scared to hurt them. Using this was unobtrusive and very easy. I really like that they have different age ranges so I don't even need to look up the acceptable age range temperature. I have only ever tried oral thermometers in the past, and I know that ear thermometers are supposed to be more accurate. Accuracy is the most important feature to me! Upon unboxing, I was impressed with the sleek design. It fits nicely in my hand. I appreciate that it comes already loaded with batteries! I read the manual, which was very easy to understand. I like the position of the buttons. It was very easy to use, and so quick to read my temperature. The oral thermometer took such a long time to read my temperature, so this ear thermometer is a major improvement. I like the large and clear display, and the fact that it stores some previous temperatures is handy. I think it would be helpful to record even more in memory than it can now. The memory feature would be much more useful if it displayed the date and time of the previous temperature, especially if monitoring an ill child. I love the colour coded feature, so that you don't need to interpret whether it's a fever or not. It's a quick and useful visual tool. I like that it has age precision, but I wish that it defaulted to the previous age each time you turn on the device, instead of having to select it each time. I do not like that the probe tips are for single use only, as it will get expensive to continue to buy replacement tips. However, it's great that it comes with 20 tips.
