The first began to have problems opening the autospout after about a year of daily use. After soaking it in soapy water, then it began to leak near the top of the straw. So for a while I just removed the straw and tipped it up to drink from. Later, on purchasing a replacement, I saw the advertised limited lifetime warranty from Contigo. I no longer had a receipt, and wasn't sure if this would be called normal wear and tear. I went ahead and submitted a warranty claim to Contigo, supplying the needed pictures that it called for. Three days later and my free replacement arrived. I noted that the replacement arrived with the spout up. I think that may be to help preserve the springs for the autospout. Probably, if I likewise leave the spout open between daily uses, it might last longer. Also, at one point with using the first bottle I trimmed the bottom of the straw to a 45&ordm; angle, as some times the end of the straw would seal off against the bottom of the bottle. When I first got the bottle I tried to tip it bottom end up to drink from. That doesn't work! The air valve squeaks like a bird if you use it that way. Stopped in a store and selected a Contigo Ashland 24oz as it appeared to be a good product. Got back out to the car, filled it up with water and hit the road. A few miles out I tried to take a drink and got nothing but air. Decided to keep driving for a bit and look at the bottle later. After a couple more hours of driving I tried to figure out why the bottle was not working properly. It turns out that the rubber piece that connects the mouthpiece to the straw had somehow been pulled out or maybe was not properly installed to begin with. Apparently takes a complete disassembly of the lid to fix, requiring a specialty screwdriver bit to take apart. I've bought the bottle during a travel in USA (I live in Argentina), and we cannot but the lid replacement here. I suggest to indicate that spout is NOT removable.
