Did you think &lsquo;goodness those look so comfortable!&rsquo;? No, of course not. That&rsquo;s not the way we are built. Normal breast shields are like a course in bad women&rsquo;s anatomy. These are thankfully different. The sizing guide is easy to use (seriously get yourself sized or figure out your size. Even a cashmere sweater can be uncomfortable) and the shielfd fit perfectly. I used a flap from a cardboard box to mark my size and found the best size for me. This is my second child and I pumped during work with my first. I wish I had these with my first. The fit is perfect. The way the shields were built it felt so much more comfortable during the pump. It also seemed to provide a better pump overall. It may have been because the shield was better fitted on the breast or my comfort, but I felt like I got a better pump than the standard breast shields that I used. These are made to fit a breast. I feel much more comfortable using these shields than any others out there. I did receive this product from the weeSpring Parent Panel to review but this did not in any way alter my review. Overall I am pleased with the Medela Flex Breast Shield. I generally pump 2x a day if not more, and the Flex Breast Shield allowed for a more hands free pumping session. This Shield seemed to adhere and contour better to my breast, no matter how full, and allowed me to do other things with my hands, or just sit back and relax during my pumping session. After trying both the 21 and 24mm size, I ultimately chose 24 as it offers more coverage. It took a few tries to figure out which direction the Shield should rest in as it&rsquo;s more of an oval vs round like the default shield. I&rsquo;ve only used traditional, one piece 24 mm Medela flanges in the past. I pumped for over 2 years with my first baby and have been pumping daily with baby #2 for over 4 months now. The first thing I noticed about the Flex flanges was the shape: they are oval instead of circular like the traditional flanges. Also, they have a soft, silicone rim (it&rsquo;s very well attached&mdash;I pulled and bent it and I don&rsquo;t think it will detach from the hard plastic flange). The shape and added rim made them more difficult to slip into my Medela pumping bra through the hole, but if you put the flange against your breast before attaching it to the connector and bottle, it wouldn&rsquo;t be a problem. I didn&rsquo;t find the Flex flanges to be any more comfortable or efficient than my traditional flanges. I also found the &ldquo;nipple tunnel&rdquo; to be shorter on the 24 mm Flex flange when compared to the traditional, one piece 24 mm flange. My nipple tapped the end of the tunnel of the Flex flange when I was pumping, which was not so much uncomfortable as it was irritating to my nipple tip. The nipple tunnel on the 27 mm Flex flange was a little longer, but it wasn&rsquo;t the right size for my nipple overall. I like knowing that the Flex flange is made without harmful materials like BPA, natural rubber latex, or phthalates. The biggest con for me - and why I don't graviate towards using these when setting up my pump - are the latex ring around the shield makes it near impossible for me to insert them into my hands free pumping bra. I usually slide the shield from the outside of the bra towards my breast. This shield didn't slide into my hands free bra and was hard to remove when I was done pumping. Since I exclusively pump, I have multiple sets of the the previous shield. Ever since receiving these, I ONLY use the new shields. They are extremely comfortable; I love the new soft rim. I have sensitive skin... so I was a bit hesitant with the rim, but it was so soft that I barely noticed it was on me. I've tried other shields before and by far, these are the ones I would go to. It was easier to center the shield around my nipple, especially since not all breasts are the same! I appreciate the more oval (as opposed to circle) shape that these new shields have, too. I suspect it will be easier for other moms with different sized and shape breasts to use them as well. Since I use the Medela hands free bra, I worried about lint sticking to the rim and discoloring. However, i've used it for 3x a day for 2 weeks and no issues. We use our Medela sterilizing bags to sterilize, and the shields are still in great shape. For comparison, I tried the previous Medela shield during one session and the new ones the next session. I was able to get through my pumping session much quicker with the new soft rim. I have a low supply, so it usually takes me a long time to pump normally. However, with these shields, they're so comfortable that time passes by quicker and the flow of milk is steady. My son is 5 months old, and I wish I had them from when he was born! I thought the soft rim definitely added more comfort as they did not dig into my breasts as compared to the hard plastic flanges that are standard issue with breast pumps. Normally I use the Medela Pump In Style with the regular-sized flanges so I went back and forth between the 21mm and the 24mm size breast shields. Ultimately, I decided the 24mm shields were the optimal fit for me based on comfort and the provided sizing instructions - this size was especially comfortable when my breasts were full / slightly engorged. I stay home with my four-month-old and do not pump daily so I did not notice a huge difference with the amount / how quickly I was able to express milk however, the pumping sessions were definitely more comfortable! With my previous child I worked full-time and if I were still in that situation, I think these shields would be a game-changer since I pumped twice a day every day. I believe these flanges could really benefit those who frequently or exclusively pump because while the hard plastic flanges will get the job done, the Medela PersonalFit Flex Breast Shields will make each session feel like less of a chore. Also, as someone who is making changes where I can to live a more natural lifestyle and eliminate chemicals, I really appreciate that these breast shields are made without harmful materials including BPA, natural rubber latex and phthalates. I&rsquo;m a new mom who is exclusively breastfeeding but as I return to work shortly I&rsquo;ve been pumping once a day to build a stash for when I return to work. Using the standard shield has been fine but I find even with a hands free bra on I still need to hold the bottles at the right angle so milk doesn&rsquo;t back up into the shield. With the Flex shields (I used the 24mm size) the oval shape and cushioned rim seem to create a better seal which has made using a hands free bra more accurately hands free! Also the softer rim greatly improves comfort which I also believed improved my efficiency. The day before using the flex shield I had a 3 oz output versus the following day with the flex shields where I had 4.5 oz in the same amount of time. Where I acknowledge the change in production can be due to other factors I do think it&rsquo;s extremely important to feel as comfortable as possible pumping and this product certainly helped. Similar to the original Medela shields I appreciate knowing these are not made with any harmful chemicals, etc, though if I had one concern it would be that the soft rim may deteriorate faster over time than the standard shields. As a mom who is exclusively pumping for a baby with a cleft palate, the soft silicone edges make a big difference. I also like the oval shape that I can rotate to get a comfortable seal. I just used the same size I was used to, although the sizing guide was very clear and informative. With the new shields, I do not get red marks on my breasts around the rims and can apply reasonable pressure while pumping without any pain. I can feel an increase in suction, and they definitely are more efficient. I can now pump for a few minutes less each session, which sure adds up with 6 pumps per day! I did not see any change in total production with the new shields, but the increase in efficiency and comfort is definitely worth the switch to the Flex Shields. Pros: the soft rim was both aesthetically pleasing and felt comfortable against my body. The shape seemed to fit like a glove against my breast. It was easy to clean and I prefer this shield knowing it is bpa free and made of good materials. This is my second time nursing and I wish so badly I would have had this flange the first time around and sooner with second daughter. These medela flex breast shields have forever changed my pumping sessions! They came with a chart to tell you how to properly find the correct size for you, I never knew it was possible to have the wrong sized flange I thought it was one size fits all type of thing.
