Ten Nursery Themes We Love
Putting a nursery together can be a ton of fun, but for some parents (particularly the left-brained set), a blank canvas can be overwhelming. Here are 10 themes we love to help jump-start your imagination.
Colours
Choose your favourite colour, and then accent the room with different shades of the same hue, or splashes from that family. You can’t go wrong with soft gender-neutrals like beige, grey or earthy greens—but exercise your own creative license!
Shapes and patterns
Stripes, checkers, circles and squares are gender neutral. And the great thing about them is that you start to see abstract pictures of animals, places and people emerge. Before you know it, the nursery is an art deco piece.
Letters and numbers
This is a good way to introduce symbols to your budding genius, and can eventually be used as a teaching tool. Use contrasting colours so they’re easy to see.
Animals
Bring your nursery walls to life with realistic renditions or cartoon critters of your favourite animals. Don’t have one? You can’t go wrong with sheep to count.
Characters
Classic children’s favourites like Mickey Mouse, Winnie The Pooh, Elmo and others make great choices, but they’re far from the only way to go. You could choose your favourite movie heroes and hope your little one grows up to be as big a fan as you are.
Sports
Whether your child’s destined to represent Canada on the world stage or stay comfortably in house league, there are plenty of ways to make them feel like they’re No. #1 on mommy and daddy’s team! You can paint murals, hang posters or even build shelves to showcase balls, pucks and trophies.
Transportation
Fostering your little one’s sense of exploration is never a bad thing. Planes, trains and automobiles on the walls make a great backdrop for exciting dreams. If you’re really going for adventure, toss in a few space shuttles.
Under the sea
Sea-like colours such as turquoise, corals, deep blues and greens will set the marine-like mood. Accessorize the room with fish, seashells, waves and plants or beloved characters like Nemo or Ariel.
Nature
From a dewy rain forest to a sunny safari landscape, there’s no shortage of inspiration you can draw from Mother Nature. Pick a part of the world and have fun exploring the animal and plant life found there. It’s beautiful, interesting and educational.
Music
Let your favourite song, artist or genre inspire you and your budding little rock star! Add some musical notes, instruments or lyrics around the room for a personal touch.
