Small rooms aren’t usually considered a plus, but for baby rooms they are! The intimacy of a small room can add to the nursery experience for you and your little one. You just have to be smart about your nursery décor and furniture choices, so you can make the most of the space.

The basic essentials for any nursery are a crib, a place to change baby and a chair for you. With the right size furniture and storage solutions you can create a beautiful AND functional space.

The crib

Creative storage solutions are essential in a small space, and the area under a crib is perfect for that sort of thing. While the inside of a crib and the crib mattress size are standard, their footprints can vary, as can the amount of available space underneath should you need it.

The change table

A changing table/dresser combo is a great space-saving solution, It’s designed to accommodate a contoured changing pad on top, and has drawers below it for storing the essentials. If you buy a quality piece, you’ll get excellent longevity out of it. Once your kids are out of diapers, it can continue in your home as a dresser.

An alternative to the dresser is an open-shelf style change table that puts the baby at a convenient height (with a protective guardrail for safety), and gives you open shelves for your baby-changing gear underneath. There are no drawers that will require childproofing later, and its conspicuous style is a good incentive for keeping everything neat.

The chair

You and your nursery chair will be spending a lot of time together, so you want to make sure you buy a comfortable one. Try out a bunch and be honest with yourself. How does your back feel in it? Are the armrests and headrests high enough? Is the chair easy to get up from?

Smart decorating

The right toy box can double as a beautiful piece of art, as can a patterned rug (which will grow to become useful as your little one starts to sit on the floor by themselves).

Wall paper and decals are another way to add style and colour to a room. They’re particularly good for small spaces as they don’t jut out from the wall like framed pictures taking up valuable space; and they don’t leave nail holes either. You can find them in anything from classic damask or striped patterns in modern youthful colours to zoo animals, sports and princess themes. Think about keeping the colour scheme light in a small room so it will always feel just a bit bigger.
