Assembly was fairly straightforward and directions were easy to follow. Batteries are included. The train track, and basically the whole thing is plastic but it is durable. You can make a few different configurations with the track and connect it to other Thomas and Friends train sets. This train set was a huge hit. Both of the children were thrilled with the packaging. Having access to the &quot;Cranky&quot; and &quot;Thomas&quot; buttons on the outside of the box really added to the anticipation. It was a slight struggle getting &quot;Cranky&quot; and &quot;Thomas&quot; out of the box. It took 30 minutes for two adults to put the train together start to finish. This included getting all the parts out of the box and getting it set-up. The tracks were difficult for the 3-year old to put together, but the 5 year old did not have a problem. Once it was set up, both of the kids, played with the set for over an hour non-stop. The biggest thrill was the loading and unloading the cargo. The 3-year old boy was enthralled with the phrases Cranky &amp; Thomas were saying, especially to each other at the loading station. Cranky and Thomas were actually having a conversation! Another bonus to this set was the different track layouts. Each different lay-out, was another adventure. I would absolutely give this a 5 star rating and recommend this set to others. It is durable. The pieces lock together and do not come apart easily during play. Even rough play. Thomas and Cranky have many different dialogues with each other based on how the toys are positioned on the track and interacting. My child loves to listen to what they are saying and then continue to act out the scene with the toys. We are also able to play with our other Thomas &amp; Friends trains on the track to make the storylines more engaging. We have a lot of fun watching the trains move around and playing with Cranky to load and move objects around the loading area. It's a big track and takes up a good amount of floor space. The assembly and understanding how to play with the track took ~25 minutes. It tends to slow train down, and without a safety bit you are unable to take it apart to remove the unwanted particals. Overall great fun! They can play with it for hours without getting bored. Pros: -The train is self propelled at the touch of a button. -There are many sound clips to rotate through. -The switches slide smoothly to adjust the direction of the train. -The crane claw is easy to use and move items in and out of the train. -The audio volume is a good volume for them to hear without being too overwhelming. -The track stays together well once assembled. The kids don't pull it apart or bump it out of place accidentally. The crane can turn full circle and has a good reach around the track. -The train has enough power to easily pull itself with cargo. -The track is dynamic with many ups, downs, turns, and decorative portions. Cons: -Some of the crane phrasing is discouraging and can lead to sadness. My kids especially did not like when the crane laughed at them and said, &ldquo;Good one!&rdquo; followed by muttering. -Our older Thomas trains were not compatible with the track. -The crane's chain and hook are always at full extension due to being a shaped plastic chain. My kids wanted to be able to raise and lower it with a wheel and repeatedly reached for one. -The track is very hard to move if it is built on the floor.
