I use purified water when steaming and it makes no difference. I just descaled it today for 4 hours soaking in vinegar and then did one sterilization and brown water poured out. That is NOT healthy for babies. The only flaw that I have found is that the lid does not lock in place. You can use this sterilizer for bottles, pacifiers and even pumps! It will fit pretty much any brand of bottles and pumps! It also kills 99.9 percent of germs and it keeps the products sterile for 24 hours!!!!!! You can sterilize up to 6 bottles at a time and it only takes 5 minutes to complete! I love that it also comes with a pacifier AND tongs to help lift out the bottles or accessories when they are done! There is a tray that you can remove if you have tall bottles too! And that tray can be used as a drying rack for bottles! I love that it has just one button to press to start or to stop. It makes it nicer because I don't have to use multiple buttons. The first one is that it doesn't require me to put it in my microwave. The second one is that it is taller than the microwave one so I can fit my tall bottles in there that don't fit in the other one. The third reason is that it takes less water than my other one. This one takes 80mL of water, and the microwave one takes 7oz. I also love the flat trays instead of the divots for only one specific purpose. The cons are that you have to make sure the top tray is situated properly otherwise you will have a spill when you open it and then have to restart the sterilization all over again.
