It's my go-to gift for babies and toddlers, because I used them to help my own daughter (who's 18 now) learn to read. I'd pick up, say, the letter &quot;A,&quot; and tell Lucy, &quot;This is the letter A! It makes sounds like (made a few vowel sounds).&quot; Over time, I would spell short sight words like &quot;and,&quot; &quot;the,&quot; &quot;with,&quot; &quot;to&quot; and say them out loud. Also, when I read books to Lucy, I would point to each word as I spoke it, so she could associate the spoken word with the written word. She was reading before she turned 3 years old! She has a love of reading and learning that has carried her into her freshman year of college.
